Paper presented to AISTECH 2006,
Cleveland, USA May 1-4 2006,
In the paper the results of an extensive simulation work performed for improving EAF Techint injection system (KT lance): the flame shape, during the burner mode operation, and the jet coherence, during the supersonic shrouded oxygen injection will be presented. The new system comprises the creation of a large diffusive flame in the first phase of the melting process in EAF providing subsonic flow in the C-D nozzle and swirl for flows surrounding the main central O2 stream; in such a way the device operate as a burner to free the area in front of it from scrap, and to provide an opening for supersonic injecting of oxygen. In a second phase the creation of a supersonic main jet of oxygen improves the scrap-cutting ability of the flame. In a third phase the device works as an oxygen lance operating with adapted condition for the main supersonic oxygen stream and enhancing the length of supersonic jet by a flame envelope (shrouding effect).
