ABSTRACT
The work consists in a study on the microstructural properties of alloys in the dendrite region for defining some parameters denoting the intrinsic tendency to form interdendritic cracks. The study is coupled to thermo-mechanical modelling of the steel solidification inside the mould in order to explain the generation of externally applied loads which gives rise to tensile stresses in the brittle region. The study has been carried out using data coming from TenarisSiderca, TenarisTamsa and TenarisDalmine. Some real cases of problems related to cracks and break-outs have been analysed and solutions proposed in terms of alloy composition changes and mould taper optimisation
