HEARTH PROTECTION IN BF OPERATION BY INJECTION OF TIO2 -MATERIALS
L.Di Sante, E.Faraci, I.Gelli Referee: P. Granati ECSC Final report 7210PR/327
It was well known that the so-called "titanium bear", which is a precipitate of carbide, nitride, and carbonitride of titanium, may form in the BF hearth area if TiO2 presents in the feed. The use of appropriate amount of titanium bearing ore in the BF was found to be an effective way to protect the hearth wall due to the formation of this "titanium bear".
The CSM idea is that  the simplest way to add Ti materials in the BF hearth area is to mix TiO2 just in the tap hole clay.
The CSM contribution is devoted to the development and characterisation of a new generation of tap hole clay containing TiO2 (ilmenite, rutilite), in order to create a protective scaffold on the inner face of the refractory near the tap hole zone.
This study is focused on thermo–mechanical, chemical and physical characterisation of the new tap hole clays, on the interaction between this materials and the liquid and refractory in the hearth of BF
