CSM Gasification Plant

An innovative gasification plant, jointly conceived and realized by Centro Sviluppo Materiali S.p.A. and Centro Rottami S.r.l., was delivered last Friday, Dec. 7th at CSM Castel Romano site. The gasifier is basically a rotary kiln which allows to treat a wide typology of materials, ranging from biomass to car fluff by exploiting and advanced differential feeding system of process gases to promote and increase gasification rate. The plant has 12 m length, 2 m diameter and is able to reach a productivity of 250 kg/h (car fluff). The initiative is part of CSM programs to develop environmental technologies dedicated to waste treatments for energy production and/or residue inertization. As known, gasification is a process that converts carbonaceous materials into carbon monoxide and hydrogen by reacting the raw material at high temperatures with a controlled amount of oxygen. The resulting gas mixture is called synthesis gas or syngas and is itself a fuel. Gasification is a very efficient method for extracting energy from many different types of organic materials and also has applications as a clean waste disposal technique.Starting from next January an extended experimental campaign is planned at CSM Castel Romano pilot plants, mainly dealing with car fluff gasification aiming at syngas/energy production. With the arrival of the innovative gasifier CSM environmental platform increases its technological assets, experimenting new solutions to try to convert waste problems into opportunities. On the topic CSM is going to organize a comprehensive workshop by March 2008, in cooperation with public utilities, private companies and national institutions.
