An investigation based on laboratory scale experiments was performed to understand the reactions occurring among silica containing refractories and carbon steels. The activity has specifically been focused on the case of the ladle tundish lining for Stream Degassing Ingot Casting. The study has concerned the interaction of high alumina, silica alumina and alumina magnesia spinel refractories, with commercial carbon steels. Results of experimental tests have shown the formation of new MnO rich phase on the steel/refractory interface. The amount of the new phase produced is proportional to the silica into the refractory and the manganese into the steel. The experimental activity outlines also the possibility that the new formed phases, which is partially liquid, can generate new inclusions. In fact, the inclusions analysed in the steel after the experimental tests have the same composition of the new formed interface.
