Lab & Facilities

CSM performs Material Forming developments by means of the following facilities:
  • The HIP (Hot Isostatic Pressing) installed at CSM is a medium-sized apparatus equipped with a 760 mm long and 250 mm large reaction chamber. Its maximum temperature and pressure values are respectively 2000 °C and 2000 Bar. The control system allows to separately manage the values of these two parameters so permitting a really resilient use of the machine. It is widely used at CSM for:
    • the consolidation of ceramic, cermet and metallurgic powders in the form of fully-shaped components;
    • the determination of the operational practices of as-cast products voids relieving;
    • the manufacturing of both Long and Discontinuous fibre Metal Matrix composite tails;
    • the production of small series of diamonds cutting tools.
  • CSM's 200 MPa, 200 x 1000 mm large CIP (Cold Isostatic Press) is devoted to the consolidation of metallic and ceramic powders to obtain net-shaped components possibly to be subjected to sintering.
  • The CSM Hydroforming equipment has been conceived, designed and built at the industrial scale level in order to shorten the time-to-market for new products by dispensing of the scaling-up phase in the development cycle; the industrial scale of the apparatus is highlighted by the 3000mm long and 2500mm large working table, by its remarkable exercise pressure which can reach the value of 4000 Bar, and a 3000 tons clamping force; though it has been thought as an industrial equipment, it really remains an experimental machine which supports two different operational modes: under an applied pressure below 500 Bar the high process fluid injection speed permits the handling of flat products, whereas besides this value an intensifier device allows it to treat tube geometries;
  • The Two High Reversible Hot Rolling Mill of CSM is a small-sized mill designed to supply a 445 kW power and a milling force which can reach the maximum value of 250 tons, allowing thickness reductions of up to 26 times. The mill is aimed at reasearch about metallic alloys both on milling operational practices, and on process control models taking into account the microstructural characteristics;
  • The Cold Rolling Mill allows CSM to study the milling operational practices at room temperature. This equipment can count on an installed power of 100 kW and a maximum applied load of 120 ton, which can guarantee reduction of thickness of up to 12 times.
