Technological Offer

It is not so easy to find a place in the world where it is so perceptible the right mixing of experience, know-how, expertise and industrial mentality in affording the technological research on iron- and steel-making in a way similiar to what happens at Centro Sviluppo Materiali S.p.A..
The long time spent in the search of the best way to turn row materials into iron, and iron into steel, allows today Centro Sviluppo Materiali to be an overly reliable partner for customers by means of the following technological services:
  • Characterization of chemical and physical properties of raw materials (e.g. iron ore, sinter and coke for BF; slag, casting powders, refractories) and their behaviour in the process;
  • Modelling of systems using computational thermodynamics techniques (e.g. control of inclusion scenario for clean steel and inclusion engineering, slag design);
  • Process modelling for the operating conditions optimization (e.g. Dynamic model of BOF conversion, desulphurisation, postcombustion);
  • Development of control system strategies for BF, EAF, AOD;
  • Development of new process technologies;
  • Laboratory determination of physical and chemical properties of metals and oxides at high temperature.

Iron ores and sinter raw mix components characterization and laboratory simulations carried out at CSM guarantee the best assessment of their mineralogical (phases determination), physical (grain size distribution, density, porosity), chemical-physical properties and their softening, packing and melting characteristics. These data enable the selection of the required permeability values guaranteeing the lowest reducing agent consumption and the correct materials fluidodynamics.

Through the determination of the pressure curves and of the percolated materials versus temperature, Centro Sviluppo Materiali S.p.A. researchers are able to assess both the material sensitiveness to softening and packing and the fraction of materials melted at the different temperature ranges.
Meeting the requirements of steel cleanness and product quality means to define operating conditions permitting to attain specific target values in terms of amount, size distribution and composition of inclusions or molten steel composition.

CSM thermodynamic models have been developed for the calculation of the equilibrium conditions in terms of mass and composition of the phases (oxides and liquid steel) and the evolution of metal, slag and gas during the time in terms of amount, composition and temperature as a function of the starting conditions and operating parameters.
