Iron and Steel is CSM's historical Core Business addressing all the manufacturing cycles: from cast-iron to the most innovative casting processes for compact lay-out plants, to the application of advanced automation and monitoring systems to metallurgy in order to produce high quality final products.
CSM considers Steel as a dynamic and strategic perspective for a future where energy savings, low CO₂ emissions, more performing ultrafine grained steels and nanotechnology-based coatings will create a real profitable scenario to stakeholders and customers.

Searching for a special or significant word able to promote CSM to the Steel Industry may appear a hard exercise easily destined to issue something trivial or not good-sounding, but not happening once you enter the spirit of the Company.

Centro Sviluppo Materiali S.p.A.'s offer to the steel industry covers both flat and long steel products, encompassing processes (e.g., iron and steelmaking, hot and cold transformation, automation, control and monitoring, pickling), product aspects (e.g., metallurgy, microstructural and analytical characterisation), and technologies to improve the service life of components.

Through its set of manufacturing technologies, testing laboratories (weldability, formability, electrochemical stability and so on) coupled with a strong modelling capability focused on chemical, physical metallurgy and process (fluidodynamics, solidification, forming, etc.) CSM guarantees to steel customers the whole product development cycle support.

As far as Iron, Steelmaking and casting are concerned, the company’s competences are currently addressed to optimize the blast furnace operational practices in accordance with ores and solid fuels characteristics, and to define the best operational practices for ores sintering and coking. The optimization of energy consumption and product quality, and blast furnaces, steel-shops and steel-casting productivity (Oxygen Converter, Electric Arc Furnace, AOD, ingot and continuous casting) by means of their automation, control and monitoring is a main target of the Company endeavour.
